frequently asked questions:
Don’t worry. Everyone is wondering the same thing.
+ Explain to me what you’re doing with horses again?
The broad umbrella we call any therapeutic work involving the use of horses is Equine Assisted-Activities and Therapies (EAAT). Under EAAT, you can find Hippotherapy, Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Equine Assisted Learning, Therapeutic Carriage Driving, Therapeutic Vaulting, and Therapeutic Riding.
Hippotherapy does not teach a child/adult any riding skills, but rather uses the motion of the horse as a treatment modality to support neuromuscular function and is administered by a licensed Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or a Speech-language Pathologist.
Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy is a type of experiential psychotherapy that must be administered by a licensed mental health professional.
Equine assisted learning is just that; learning life skills through interaction with the horses such as the importance of self-compassion and being self-aware, trusting others and being trustworthy, social skill set training, developing sequencing and problem-solving strategies, learning to set boundaries and respecting others’, the repercussions of our body language and reading subtle cues in others, and promoting empathy through caregiving experiences.
Therapeutic Carriage Driving can be a valuable alternative and is taught by a PATH-certified therapeutic driving instructor; therapeutic vaulting is a modification of traditional vaulting but on horseback and is taught by a PATH-certified vaulting instructor.
And finally, therapeutic riding or adaptive riding equips students with tangible and empowering horseback riding skills under the direction of a trained, certified therapeutic riding instructor who has a strong equine background and a knowledge of diverse disabilities, the support of up to three volunteers per rider, and specially chosen adaptive tack/equipment and therapy horses. There are countless individuals with special needs who safely enjoy all the recreational and social pleasures therapeutic riding has to offer and experience a vastly improved quality of life. A disability does not have to impede a person from riding and enjoying the company of horses. In fact, being on the back of a horse can be very therapeutic, but this is not per se “therapy” because it is not administered by a licensed therapist.
At Dreamweaver Equine Center, we offer equine assisted learning in each program and lesson objective as well as therapeutic riding with a PATH Intl. riding instructor, bevy of volunteers, and specially trained therapy horses.
